Normal processes are to stagger the backups to match your workload, also you could not backup all the stuff that does not change (old historic) , either PPI partition backups or create a current month/week set of tables and back them up etc..

Are you using Open BAR via direct tapes or MVS (MVS is much slower)

Version 12 also has online backup capability
