Do you come from an IBM Mainframe background?
The calculation of size that you are using is an IBM packed decimal size calculation.
Other systems store decimal data in different formats.
On Teradata, decimal values are stored in 1, 2, 4 or 8 byte fields. You can find the actual sizes used for different value ranges from the
Teradata manuals.
