LENGTH is an ODBC extension that Queryman/Teradata ODBC Driver is accommodating. This behavior can be disabled in the Queryman (ahem, SQL
Assistant) options screen under the Query tab.
If you do not alias the LENGTH(<string>) function in your query you will see that Teradata is actually using the CHARACTERS() function
(Non-ANSI function) to obtain your result.
