Oddly enough, the topic never came up in the design review meeting. :-)
I neglected to mention that the main reason COLLECT STATS can be recategorized as a DML statement in that future release is that it will no
longer write the stats it collects into DBC.TVFields and DBC.Indexes, but into a new dictionary table that's used *only* to contain statistics.
That way, the system won't have to hold write locks for a relatively long time on the very frequently updated DBC.TVFields and DBC.Indexes
tables.
