I think it depends on what unix flavor you are using, In Solaris and Linux, it doesn't throw any errors if the reader is not there yet.

what UNIX flavor you have by the way?...

My current client uses Linux. I would expect a SIGPIPE exception in this case but haven't tested it lately.
