The user's don't have to have entries in their hosts file if proper DNS entries are maintained and if the client systems are configured for DNS look ups.

For example as per general conventions, if your TDPID is prod1 , and your cop entries being prod1cop1, prod1cop2 etc, then you need to have DNS entries

     prod1cop1.mycompany.com 
     prod1cop2.mycompany.com 

etc

And in your bteq and other TD utils, you can say

     .logon prod1/userid,passwd;

You don't need to have entries in host files, as long as the client PCs/Servers are configured for DNS lookup.

It's funny though, if you know the DNS name, it doesn't take a genius to figure out the IP address ;)
