The number you need to set on the environment variable is actually the number of 'cop' entries in your hosts file (or DNS server).

This should be the number of parsing engines attached to your network ... which is not necessarily the same as the number of nodes in the system.

Note that in Dieter's example 'dbc' is the name of the system you are logging on to.
