I found the resolution to the problem. I added wescodist.com to the server name in the odbc configuration and it reduced the connection time by 2 to 3 fold. Just a word of caution, I did notice that this did not work for older drivers, but only on the new teradata driver. Of course it's best to be on the latest anyways.
