Christian, do you mean "pipe" here as a redirection method and not FIFO?
If you do then I think you are comparing two different approaches here. A closer thing to compare to the "gzip method" would be the Named Pipe
Access Module and a real FIFO. If you are in the investigative mode try it. It would be interesting to see the results.
