Subj:   Re: Automating Space management

From:   Glen Blood

Yes. We have a process that has been in place for several years now. It works very well and has saved me countless hours of DBA time monitoring and managing space usage. Not to mention, the reduction in off hour emergencies (sleep is heavenly). It has also allowed us to automagically share space between processes that need considerable space (~200 GB) at different times of the week.

We use a combination of stored procedures and UNIX scripts.

It is a bit more complex than what you proposed.

For instance,

What happens if your process runs between the time that a large table in a database has been cleared out and is loaded. The database may have considerable excess space that you remove and then needs that space during a load.

What happens if the system is busy. It takes system resources to move space.

Where do you keep the excess space and how do you move it.

Glen
