Aananth,

If you have the space, an INSERT/SELECT into an identical new table with the changed values.

Then rename the source table to _old and rename to new table to the original source table name.

The beauty of this is it is invisible to users and fast.

Be sure to collect statistics, and add secondary indexes after the INSERT/SELECT.
