Charles,
I can comment on of one of your questions(4) based on my personal experience. When you want to do any DML operations try use MULTILOAD,
FASTLOAD, EXPORT , FASTEXPORT utilities rather than working with SQL statements in BTEQ. That is always much more efficient. I have changed a
process from BTEQ to MULTILOAD insert/delete combination and the CPU time has decreased 50% !!
