Subj:   Re: Statistics Help

From:   Harold D Kleven

Whoa! I was simply attempting to determine how widespread the awareness of this "relativly new function" was and, if not well known, to publicize it's availabilty. At this site we don't assume any guarantee or warranty with stats, but we do collect a lot of them and we collect them often (weekly, at least). I'm sure most of us have seen instances where stats do not help a bad query and I, for one, have seen instances where stats actually caused a bad plan and had to be removed for the optimzer to select a better plan.

As the format and usage will confirm, this has nothing to do with the DIAGNOSTIC statements related to specific tools documented (in my view) in the 6.0 release. I suspect it's related to StatisticsWizard, though, and Teradata is certainly trying to make that tool more useful/accurate!

I do believe that Teradata wants their customers to have the best tools available to them to help them solve their own problems. If they should take away a function/feature down the pike, I'm sure there's a good reason for it.

That said, enough already about the caveats - we know about caveats. Things are suppose to perform as stated, no more and no less.
