Subj:   Statistics Help

From:   Harold D Kleven

We recently received some major help from GSC regarding a bad query (hot amping) by identifing some areas for us to gather new statistics. When we asked the analyst how they came about those recommendations, hoping to get a methodology we could apply here, they responded "simple, just use this approach in SQLassistant" and showed us

     diagnostic HELPSTATS on for session;
     EXPLAIN ;

Whoa! Recommendations appear at the end of the EXPLAIN! We were properly impressed, as we had never heard of this feature before and later couldn't find it in any manual. (analyst implied it was a relativly new feature.) Has anyone else discovered this and are there any massive concerns about it?
