I do not have a SI on this combination of columns when I did this explain. BUT I did have a SI on the branch_id column. I did think though that statistics would increase, not decrease, my confidence level.

On a side note, since the original post, I did create an index on branch_id/invoice_no. And then collect statistics on the index.

For each step I ran an explain.

After I created the index, (and dropped the original multi-column statistics), the confidence level was low.

After I collected statisics on the index, the confidence level was high.

Just to make sure I wasn't losing my mind, I repeated the entire process to validate the confidence levels at each step.
