Subj:   Why would collecting stats make things worst?

From:   Nazy Gholizadeh

In our environment , the majority of the times, performance has been improved by collecting stats. We had a situation yesterday, when after collecting stats on 5 tables, a query that was running for 4 minutes continued running for over 2 hours, before we cancelled it. After dropping the stats, it went back to run in 4 minutes.

Can someone tell me why and in what cases collecting stats can make things worst? Other queries might need those stats.

Thanks,

Nazy Gholizadeh
