Clay,

We have a metadata table that we allow users to make changes to. This table has a Before update trigger that writes a copy of the old data to a backup table before it allows the update.

This is different than what you are doing because you are changing the data 'live' but it does provide you with an audit trail. It assumes that you always want to show the updated data but it does eliminate the join problem.
