Yes, I can achieve what I was looking for by using the method that you have pointed to. But then I was just thinking would Teradata allow to rewrite or overload existing function. I guess currently it doesn't as you pointed out it would throw a 3706 syntax error.

The other question can I call an inbuilt function from an UDF?

May be somewhere down the line I hope all such things would be possible.
