  Interesting syntax. Is it documented somewhere? I only know this form:  


  .SET RECORD VARTEXT X'09'  



I'm looking at the documentation for V2R5.0 and I see it in "SQL Reference Vol. 3; Chapter 2: Data Literals; Hexadecimal Literals". Notice that one is the "Client Form" and one is the "internal DBS Form".
