Run explains on both requests. They should lead you to the problem. Look for unevenly distributed spool files or spool files who's actual size differes greatly from their estimated size. You'll have to write queries to answer these questions, of course. Are you familiar with the hash functions? You'll need to use them to determine spool file distribution.
