In trouble shooting efforts I've done with Microsoft on ODBC they consistently use the utilities provided by SysInternals. Specifically we've used RegMon and FileMon to identify dlls that were problematic. It also doesn't hurt to have the ODBC trace on at the time the analysis is done.
