Well, I did not say that the changes will work under all circumstances and on all releases. They just _might_ ...
A few remarks on your examples. Last time I checked, compression did not apply to varchar columns at all; a column must be fixed-
length to qualify for compression. Your columns are nullable and when you introduce a compression value this might change the
presence bits and fail 'alter table'. There are also release specific limitations. Which release are you on?
