Has anyone come across this situation?

table a ~ 10,000 rows
table b > 73 million rows

a query with (all) stats on table a joins a to b serially and the query runs out of spool space (500 gig) after 15-20 minutes.

the same query with no stats on table a processes a and b in parallel and runs in about 4-6 minutes.

We're on V2R4.1.3. We've opened a case on this.

Any insight would be appreciated.
