I was pretty impressed with the capabilities of Teradata Warehouse Miner (it was a lot more than we needed at this stage). The fact that it keeps the data on the Teradata side is a big win, you don't need a separate stats server. My last company used SAS (server side) and we (the DBA team) were always getting sucked into projects to get the data sets down to a manageable size for SAS.

You could the tool just as a sql generator, you have the choice of running the queries or just saving the sql. Many of the analyses (ex: multifactor regression, affinity analysis) would be multi week development efforts if you tried to write them yourself.
