The main reason in my view as to why the 4-step process is preferable to the Insert-select is that - If the Insert-select abends in the inserting stage, it starts a expensive rollback consuming a lot of machine resources and also locks up the table being inserted into. Clearly this is not acceptable with the increasing expectation of DW being up 24 x 7.
