Is there anyway to tell if a new column being added to the end of a table that's marked as NOT NULL DEFAULT ' ' COMPRESS ' ' is actually getting compressed.

I do an INSERT/SELECT from CURRENT to NEW table and new table has 15 new columns added to the end define as above. I usually don't see an increase in DASD use, but this time the table size increased by 54 GB as if compression didn't happen on the new columns.
