Also, backing up into a second database allows you to drop fallback (assuming that is your policy) saving space and letting you keep resusage for longer. My policy is generally 1 month in the live tables for on the job checks and 12 in backups for long term analysis.

There is nothing to stop you moving resusage data to your backup on a daily basis.
