Having the same name for data elements that mean the same thing semantically clarifies the database. Once you introduce different names, the possiblity that the elements could have come from different legacy systems (often the case) and may be subtlely different arises.

I guess I'm philosophically opposed to having different names for the same data element, but local culture is sometimes hard to fight.
