I'd agree with Claybourne if you are planning to update a significant number of rows in your table. In this case, logging will be a major overhead. Also, if you are updating the PI of a large no of rows, it will be slow, so the MSR approach will use block inserts into an empty table.

However, if you plan to update a small number of rows, the logging will not be a major issue as the the FTS (if used) takes more resources.
