One major constraint I find with the ALTER TABLE command, is that it only appends new columns to the RHS of the table. Is there a way of inserting a column with one command;

i.e.
PRODUCT_ID    SALES_VALUE
1234          34.65

to

PRODUCT_ID    DATE       SALES_VALUE
1234          05/03/02   34.65
