One way to handle the Archives would be to create multiple jobs (on the mainframe) to archive different databases to tapes. The
split could be done in such a way that the jobs run for approx. the same time.
Consider using high-volume tapes (like magstar). Cluster backups eatup more tapes but are said to be more efficient.
Having regular in-house archive works better in the long run even if you have a off-site disaster plan (such as with NCR).
