The problem you describe (which I have reproduced on my system) is indeed intriguing. The documentation, however, suggests that you are doing something verboten.

Combination With Other Functions and Clauses ===

The following rules and restrictions apply to the use of the RANDOMfunction.

. RANDOM can only be called in a SELECT list.

. RANDOM cannot be referenced by position in a GROUP BY or ORDER BY clause.

Perhaps the "fix" should be generating a syntax error when RANDOM is used in a VALUES clause.
