Thanks for all the help.

This may sound bizarre, but I looked at the data file with UltraEdit and realized that my data was 16 bytes and the cr/lf were bytes 17 and 18. I added two spaces in the record making the18 bytes (plus the cr/lf as bytes 19 and 20) , and the fastload worked. I used

SET RECORD UNFORMATTED

and had a filler of 2 bytes at the end of the record for the cr/lf.

This never changed. I can't explain it.
