If you are using BTEQ or Fastexport you can also specify the number of rows returned:

In BTEQ:

.set retlimit 1000;

In Fastexport:

EXPORT OUTFILE FORMAT MODE OUTLIMIT

where is the number of records to export, after which the Fastexport utility will end.
