Thanks for that, it's not how I'd understood it was to be implemented.

I've just gone back and read the v2r4 release summary and that talks about changing locks etc. It also says that these changes "...allow statistics to be collected in parallel from several sessions against the same table." I know that v2r4 was intented to allow a reduction in the time it takes to re-collect stats and maybe this is how it has been achieved. This implementation also means that this reduction in time will benefit you during the initial collection and not just re-collection.
