I can't help you on V2R2 (although i think it's the same) but if you've got access to the V2R3 SQL manual volume 2 (the DDL ref) then check page 3-3 "Rounding And Numeric Data types". That's got as detailed an explanation as I've seen. Having said that, the results that you've shown here contradict what is in the manual ! (or rather they contradict my understanding of what is in the manual).
