Update on my efforts: a couple of people suggested trying to do a BUILD using Arcmain (thanks, Joanne & Patricia). I've tried this on one table, but still no joy. The error output by Arcmain is below - no surprises in that it's moaning about things missing again:

06/22/2000 14:37:31 --- Sending buildsort for index 0.
06/22/2000 14:37:31 *** Warning 2972:No table header exists for table.
06/22/2000 14:37:41 "DATABASE"."TABLENAME" - SKIPPED BUILDING DUE TO ERRORS
06/22/2000 14:37:41 STATEMENT COMPLETED
