Rob,

Isn't this a "not much to gain" point. Compression seems to be most effective where you have a high number of repetitive values. Most numeric values I can think of would not usually fit into this category.

Additionally, aren't the numeric and date data types already stored in a more efficient format internally? Most platforms do some of this, i.e. packed, etc.
