Well, the solution was found and it was really straight forward....

When the MLOAD froze on disconnect the UNIX process was killed. However the user remained connected to the database!!! Using xgtwglobal the session was aborted and an exec for 'release mload' was successful.

I remain mystified as to why the disconnect never completed!!!
