Teradata has nothing like the SERIAL function. As Eric already mentioned, when somebody wants to create a system-assigned number,
it has to be done by an external process before the data is loaded. I've toyed with the idea of using one of the HASH functions to
generate a relatively unique number from data contained within a row, but there's always the possibility of a synonym.
Out of curiosity, what does the NUMBER(*) function do? My background is Teradata and so the function is new to me.
