Teradatareview ( www.teradatareview.com ) has an article in the Spring, '98 issue titled "A Lesson in Outer Joins (Learned the Hard Way)!". The summer issue of '98 had an article entitled "Efficienciew & Techniques: Using Outer Joins". These might be a good starting point for you.
